Heritage Waters Coalition Opposes SB 776 with Arizona/New Mexico Counties

Silver City, New Mexico (August 11, 2023) – Heritage Waters Coalition supports the Coalition of Arizona/New Mexico Counties in opposing SB 776 M.H. Dutch Salmon Greater Gila Wild and Scenic Rivers Bill, affecting 14 counties and over 700,000 people. The bill plans over 420 miles of river segments that may affect local economies, including timber, farming, and mining industries.

This region is economically significant, with extensive federal ownership and conservation designations. SB 776 lacks the spirit of a free-flowing wild and scenic river, with unprecedented and subjective designations.

The Coalition disputes the Gila Forest Service's eligibility justifications for rivers like Willow, Iron, and Mineral Creek. They provide evidence against these claims, focusing on factors like fish species introduction and geologic features.

The Coalition requests a review of the Gila Forest Wild and Scenic River recommendations, highlighting concerns about negative economic impacts on local communities.

With a rich agricultural history, these counties emphasize responsible river management, disputing any new threats necessitating additional management under the WSRA.

The Heritage Waters Coalition seeks collaboration to find a balanced resolution, honoring both community needs and ecological integrity.
